Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion it rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This Rifle retains about 95% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows operational wear on the action, along with some finish thinning on the left side of the receiver. The jeweling on the bolt shows wear, but the jeweling is mostly intact, and still vivid. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a very light, crisp and clean break, with minimal take-up and over-travel. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the Leupold scope as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Remington 700 BDL is one of the most iconic American bolt-action rifles, combining classic walnut-and-blued-steel aesthetics with the accuracy and dependability that cemented the Model 700’s reputation as a premier hunting rifle. Introduced in the early 1960s, the BDL trim level added higher-grade finishes, pressed checkering, and a Monte Carlo comb for better scope-eye alignment—features that helped it stand out as a premium factory option. Chambered here in .243 Winchester, this rifle is particularly well suited for varmints, predators, and deer-sized game thanks to its flat trajectory, manageable recoil, and proven effectiveness.
This example, manufactured in 1969, wears its age well. The 22” barrel and action retain about 95% of their original blued finish, with only light thinning and operational wear, while the walnut stock shows honest use with scattered dings and scratches but no cracks or structural issues. The checkering remains sharp. Mechanically, the action is smooth, the safety functions properly, and the trigger breaks clean and light—hallmarks of the Model 700 platform. The bore is excellent, rating a 10/10, ensuring accuracy potential remains outstanding.
Adding practical value, this rifle comes topped with a Leupold M8 6x scope, a rugged fixed-power optic favored by serious hunters for its clarity and simplicity. Together, rifle and scope create a package that is as functional in the field today as it was when it left Ilion over five decades ago. For collectors of early-production Model 700s, or hunters seeking a reliable classic in .243 Winchester, this BDL is a fine blend of utility, craftsmanship, and vintage appeal.
