Our Assessment: The Remington Model 40XBR is a legendary name in precision shooting, built specifically for benchrest competition and custom accuracy work. Originally crafted in Remington’s Custom Shop, the 40X series rifles were held to higher tolerances and fitted with premium components compared to standard production models. This single-shot, sled-feed 40XBR chambered in 6mm Bench Rest Remington with a .272″ neck is purpose-built for tight group shooting, offering a flat-shooting cartridge, excellent barrel harmonics, and near-custom fit and finish. These rifles earned a reputation as tack-drivers in competitive circles, and their continued popularity is a testament to their out-of-the-box performance. This example is fitted with a 27” stainless bull barrel marked specifically for 6mm BR Remington with a .272″ neck, indicating a precision-oriented rebarrel for a tighter, competition-grade chamber. The stock is a wide-beamed walnut benchrest configuration with a fluted straight comb and semi-pistol grip, providing excellent support from bags or rests. While the stock shows light handling wear and a few small chips, it remains solid with no cracks. Mechanically, the rifle is in excellent condition with a clean, bright bore and sharp rifling. The jeweled bolt, smooth action, and overall condition suggest limited use and careful handling.
For benchrest competitors, long-range precision shooters, or collectors of high-end American-made bolt actions, this Remington 40XBR is a serious tool built for accuracy. With its strong bore, heavy stainless barrel, and smooth single-shot sled action, it’s well-suited for load development, competition, or simply stretching precision at the range. These rifles are increasingly hard to find in clean, original condition, especially with specialized rebarrel work already completed. This one’s ready to earn its keep on the bench or in a precision rifle collection. -R.E.
