Our Assessment: The Remington Model 25 is a classic example of the company’s early twentieth century slide action sporting rifles, offering a compact and efficient repeating design at a time when pump rifles were still carving out their place alongside lever actions. Produced between 1923 and 1936, the Model 25 combined Remington’s clean industrial styling with a smooth tubular magazine feed system, making it a practical small game and light varmint rifle for rural America. Its trim receiver, exposed hammer, and long 24 inch barrel give it a distinctly period appearance that reflects the transitional era between black powder roots and modern smokeless sporting arms.
Chambered in .32 20 WCF, this rifle is paired with one of the most versatile small bore cartridges of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Originally developed in the 1880s, the .32 20 gained popularity for its mild recoil, accuracy, and effectiveness on small game and pests, while also being commonly chambered in both rifles and revolvers. The cartridge’s modest ballistics made it well suited to the Remington Model 25’s pump action, allowing for fast follow up shots without excessive report or recoil. The factory iron sights are intact, and the stock collar has been drilled and tapped for a tang sight, a popular period upgrade, though no tang sight is currently present.
Condition reflects a well used but honest sporting rifle that has seen decades of service. Approximately 80 percent of the finish remains, much of it now darkened into a brown patina that is typical of early Remington bluing. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling, showing only minor erosion and fouling, and rates 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks show scattered scratches, finish loss, and light oil darkening near the receiver, but remain structurally sound and in Good condition overall. The action functions correctly, though the action bar latch may require attention, and the rifle was not fired during evaluation. We are no longer offering layaway.
