Our Assessment: The Remington Model 25 is a representative example of the company’s early slide action sporting rifles, produced during a period when American shooters were embracing repeating rifles for small game and farm use. Manufactured between 1923 and 1936, the Model 25 combined a compact receiver, exposed hammer, and tubular magazine with Remington’s characteristically clean lines. Its pump action offered fast follow up shots while retaining the balance and handling qualities that appealed to hunters accustomed to lever guns of the same era.
Chambered in .25 20 WCF, this rifle reflects one of the classic small bore cartridges of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Introduced in the 1890s, the .25 20 was valued for its mild recoil, flat shooting characteristics, and efficiency on small game and varmints, making it a natural pairing for the Model 25 platform. This example features a 24 inch barrel and retains its original beaded front sight, while the rear barrel sight is absent. A Lyman tang peep sight is installed, a period correct upgrade that would have been favored by shooters seeking improved precision without altering the rifle’s traditional profile.
Condition shows honest use consistent with a working sporting rifle that has seen decades of service. Approximately 80 percent of the finish remains, much of it having darkened to a brown patina typical of early Remington bluing, with scattered scratches, handling marks, and small spots of corrosion present. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, showing only very minor erosion and fouling, and rates 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stocks display finish loss and wear, particularly on the forend, with the buttstock appearing to have been refinished at some point, and overall remain in Good condition. The action functions correctly, and no accessories are included. We are no longer offering layaway. Please see our high resolution photos and good luck on your bid! MF
