Sights / Optics: The front sight is a metal bead fixed to the rib at the muzzle. The top of the rib is serrated to help reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut featuring a splinter forend with black tip inlay, a semi-pistol grip, a straight comb, and checkered hard rubber R.A. Co. buttplate. The forend has a minor loss on the left edge toward the front. There are scattered nicks, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is well defined. The LOP measures 14” and 13 1/4” from the fronts of the triggers to the back of the buttplate. Drop at comb is approximately 2″, drop at heel 3″. The plate has scattered light wear and discoloration, but has well defined checkering. The stocks are in about Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Damascus & Case Color

Finish Originality: Original, the barrels and forend iron are serial-matched to the receiver.

Bore Condition: The bores are semi-bright. There is scattered light erosion and pitting in the bores, more in the right than the left. In this writer’s opinion, the bores rate 6 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 80% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. The damascus patterning is strong. The receiver has some handling wear on the bottom and some areas of muting, but is generally good. There are some scattered nicks, scuffs, and scratches. There is infrequent minor surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are legible. Overall, this shotgun is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The barrels lock up with no play to the receiver. We did not fire this firearm. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic’s check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: E. Remington & Sons was established in 1816 and produced mostly firearms, though they had forays into other implements, the most successful of which was their typewriter. The typewriter design was sold in 1886 when they hit a rough patch financially, but it was not enough to save the company and in 1888 the company was bought by Hartley & Graham and the Remington Arms Company was formed. One of the first changes made was a redesign of the Model 1887 shotgun, making the new Model 1889 with bar locks, new circular type rebounding hammers, extension rib, double bolt, and Deeley & Edge forend. It is a testament to the new model that it continued from serial range of the 1887 at about 30000k, continuing to over 100000 and then shifting to 200000 with a total of about 134,200 Model 1889s made. The guns were made in seven grades with different barrel materials, levels of engraving and frame sizes for 10 gauge, 10/12 gauge and 16 gauge guns. This is a 10 gauge Grade 3 produced in 1904. This is still a solid double gun that will be a cool addition to your C&R or Remington collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
