Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter-round blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a shallow “U”-notch in the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth walnut. There are losses, most notably on the left panel at the heel corner. There is some shrinkage, most visible near the frame. Scattered light scuffs and handling marks are present, along with some small scratches. The grips rate in about Good overall condition and would rate higher without the loss.
Type of Finish: Nickel
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright, and the rifling is strong where not interrupted by erosion. Pitting is scattered throughout the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 7/10.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 70% of its metal finish. There are scattered areas of finish loss, some with erosion and others showing discoloration from previous oxidation. Scattered scuffs, scratches, and areas of cloudy finish are visible. There are some handling marks and a turn line on the cylinder. The screw heads display light tool marks. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in about Very Good condition as an Antique.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up with some side-to-side movement. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Our Assessment: The Remington Model 1875 Single Action Army is essentially a cartridge-firing evolution of the Remington 1858 New Model Army, a revolver highly regarded during and after the Civil War for its rugged construction and ease of disassembly. Unfortunately for Remington, the 1875 entered production two years after Colt’s 1873 Single Action Army had already secured large Army contracts and a strong civilian following. Despite this, the Remington quickly earned respect among civilians and lawmen of the Old West for its robust design and solid performance. Production numbers remained relatively low, making surviving examples desirable to collectors. This example, serial number 711, is one of the nicer ones we’ve encountered—retaining a high percentage of original nickel, mechanically sound operation, and crisp markings. While the grips show some losses, they could be replaced to enhance presentation. As it sits, it’s a handsome and historically significant revolver that will make a fine addition to any Remington or antique firearm collection.
