Markings: The top flat of the barrel is marked “PATENTED SEPT. 14, 1858 / E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. U.S.A. / NEW MODEL.” The left barrel flat bears small inspection proofs. The underside of the barrel is marked “25371.” The brass trigger guard is stamped with a “B” inspector initial. The cylinder shows “G G” sub-inspector initials and government-style proofing. These marks are consistent with U.S. Ordnance acceptance inspection.
Barrel Length: 8” Octagonal Barrel
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass cone-shaped blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a notch milled into the top strap.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The one-piece walnut grip panels show honest wear and handling marks from field use, with scattered dings, softened edges, and light impressions consistent with age. The wood fits the frame well, showing no signs of modern sanding or refinishing. The patina around the grip frame and buttstrap complements the aged brass guard.
Type of Finish: Originally Blued with Brass Trigger Guard
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright with visible rifling and mild pitting throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 6/10 for a percussion revolver of its era.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 20–25% of its original blue finish, now faded to a plum-gray patina with scattered surface oxidation and fine pitting across the frame and barrel. The cylinder exhibits heavy percussion cap battering around the nipples, indicative of substantial wartime use. The brass guard has aged to a deep mustard tone, and the grips remain solid and well fit. Screw heads show expected wear from service maintenance. Overall, this revolver stands as a complete, original Civil War–era example displaying authentic field character.
Mechanics: The hammer holds securely at half and full cock. The cylinder indexes and locks properly, though the mechanism shows age-appropriate wear. The trigger releases cleanly. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment:
The Remington 1858 New Model Army was one of the principal sidearms of the Union Army during the Civil War, prized for its robust solid-frame design and ease of cylinder removal — advantages over the open-top Colt pattern of the same era. Manufactured by E. Remington & Sons in Ilion, New York, it became the standard for durability and reliability under combat conditions, with over 130,000 produced between 1863 and 1875.
Chambered in .44 caliber cap-and-ball, the revolver offered both stopping power and ease of maintenance in the field. This example, bearing inspector markings “B” and “G G,” reflects government contract manufacture, and its evident cap wear and patina tell the story of a revolver that likely saw real wartime service. The solid-frame design was so effective that it influenced Remington’s later cartridge conversions and subsequent metallic-cartridge revolvers.
This revolver is an honest and mechanically complete example of Remington’s finest wartime revolver—an authentic link to the 1860s and one of the best-balanced percussion sidearms of the American Civil War.
