Our Assessment: The Remington Model 14R Carbine in .25 Remington represents the smallest bore offered in John D. Pedersen’s innovative slide-action rifle design. Introduced in the 1910s, the Model 14 utilized a helical tubular magazine that allowed safe use of rimless cartridges—a mechanical advancement over traditional lever actions of the day. The .25 Remington cartridge was developed to compete directly with Winchester’s .25-35 WCF, offering mild recoil and efficient ballistics suitable for deer and varmint hunting in the early smokeless powder era. The carbine variant, with its compact 18½-inch barrel, was designed for quick handling in dense brush and was the lightest configuration in the Model 14 line.
This 1918-produced 14R Carbine retains around 50% of its original blue finish, showing honest use and age-consistent wear. The bore remains bright with well-defined rifling, and the action operates smoothly. The walnut stocks, though repaired and refinished, maintain their original crescent steel buttplate and classic early Remington lines. This carbine stands as an appealing and increasingly scarce example of Remington’s transitional sporting arms—compact, elegantly engineered, and representative of Pedersen’s early 20th-century innovation.
