Stock Configuration and Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with round grooved slide handle, smooth semi-pistol grip, straight comb, and Remington checkered steel buttplate. There is a significant chip out of the top of the stock where it meets the receiver. There is a 2-inch crack on the left side of the grip at the receiver and another smaller crack on the right side of the wrist. It is possible that there was an old refinish to the wood and the pump grip. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The bottom right of the grip has a chip. There are scratches, compressions, and nicks. Overall, the stocks are in Fair to Good condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original metal / refinished wood
Bore Condition: The bore is dull but the rifling is sharp. There is faint intermittent erosion throughout the grooves. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 7/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 65% of its finish. The balance of the finish shows general operation wear with finish loss on the magtube. The magazine spring has been replaced but the follower does not seat correctly in the magazine tube and has difficulty feeding. THE RIFLE SHOULD BE EXAMINED BY A COMPETENT GUNSMITH BEFORE FIRING!!! The screwheads are sharp with faint tool marks. There is finish loss on the bottom metal which has taken to a deep mottled patina with rust freckling. There is thinning on the leading edges. There is intermittent oxidation throughout. There are scratches and nicks. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fair to Good condition, considering the needed repair.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Remington Model 14 1/2 in .44 Remington or .44-40 Winchester is a rare and highly collectible pump-action rifle designed for hunters and sporting shooters in the early 20th century. Introduced as a variation of the Remington Model 14, the Model 14 1/2 was specifically chambered for the larger, more powerful .44 Remington and .44-40 Winchester cartridges, both of which were widely used for hunting and law enforcement at the time.
The Model 14 1/2 is regarded for its fine craftsmanship and unique engineering, setting it apart from other pump-action rifles of the era. While Remington’s .44 caliber rifles were not produced in the same quantities as other models, surviving examples are sought after by collectors due to their rarity and historical significance. Whether for a dedicated Remington collector, a firearms historian, or a hunter who appreciates vintage pump-action rifles, the Remington Model 14 1/2 in .44 Rem or .44-40 represents an exceptional piece of American firearm history.
