Our Assessment: The Remington Model 14 1/2 A in .38-40 Winchester is a slide-action rifle produced by Remington between 1913 and 1934 as part of the Model 14 series. Designed by John Pedersen, the rifle was an innovative alternative to lever-action rifles, offering smooth cycling and a distinctive spiral tubular magazine that prevented pointed bullets from igniting primers in the magazine stack. The rifle features a 22-inch barrel, open iron sights, a blued steel receiver, and a walnut stock available in either a straight grip or pistol grip configuration. Chambered for the .38-40 Winchester, a cartridge traditionally associated with lever-actions, the Model 14 1/2 A allowed shooters to enjoy the rapid-fire capability of a pump-action rifle while using a proven and popular cartridge.
Though not as widely produced as competing Winchester lever guns, the Model 14 1/2 A found favor with hunters and sportsmen looking for a fast-handling rifle for deer, varmints, and medium-sized game. Its takedown design made it easy to transport and maintain, adding to its practicality in the field. Today, these rifles are highly collectible. Due to their heavy use, well-preserved examples are uncommon. The Model 14 1/2 A in .38-40 Winchester remains a unique and desirable firearm among collectors and enthusiasts of early 20th-century American sporting rifles.
