Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 25% of its finish – most of which is on the receiver. There are a couple of bright scratches and almost complete bluing loss on the barrel, with resultant oxidation. The receiver shows considerable scratching and some rust freckles. There is wear on the front portion of the magtube from racking the slide. There is heat discoloration on the rear of the magtube at the receiver. The screwheads are marred but serviceable. The bottom of the mag tube has some light erosion around the edges of the loading plate. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition as C&R.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington Model 14 ½ , chambered in .44-40, is a distinctive slide-action rifle known for its innovative design and practical functionality. Introduced in 1912, the Model 14 was developed by John Pedersen and stands out for its spiral magazine tube, which prevents the pointed bullets from contacting the primers of other cartridges—a unique feature for its time. The Model 14 ½ was a 1913 offering chambered in .38-40 W.C.F. and .44-40.
The .44-40 cartridge, for which this rifle is chambered, pushes a 200gr.bullet at about 1250 fps with 40 grains (thus the “-40”) of black powder. It was introduced in 1873 along with the ‘73 Winchester rifle (“the gun that won the West”). To the old movie buff, it featured prominently in the 1950 Jimmy Stewart movie, “Winchester ‘73.”
This rifle has an interesting feature – the slide moves the magazine tube as well as the action. 126,000 Models 14 and 14 ½ were made. And you can own one of the survivors! Please see our photos. -C.B.
