Bore Condition: The bore is semi-bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light erosion in the bore.
In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 7.5 out of 10.
Many military and C&R eligible weapons have bores that will show erosion. This is not only due to age but to the fact that corrosive primers were commonly used in ammunition worldwide. For example, the U.S. used corrosive ammunition throughout WWII. The U.S. military did not begin to phase out corrosive-primed ammunition until the 1950s.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 40% of its metal finish. There are scuffs and scratches throughout the metal surfaces. There are minor areas of pitting on the receiver. There is thinning to the finish and large drag marks on the barrel bands. There are small spots of surface rust on the barrel, mainly near the muzzle. The screw heads show light use. The markings are blurry around the edges and there are characters in the tang marking that are difficult to read. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a leather sling.
Our Assessment: Remington’s Rolling Block rifles saw service from 1867 all the way into the First World War. The robust single-shot rifles are known for their accuracy, strength of action, and ease of use. They turned out to be one of Remington’s most successful designs seeing use in numerous militaries all over the world. It was so popular that production continued even when more modern options were available. It was chambered for numerous calibers and went through many design changes over the course of production. This is an example of a Model 1902, sometimes referred to as a 1901, from before the merger with Union Metallic Cartridge Co. in 1912. It is chambered in 7mm Mauser, which was one of the more common variants. The stock is in good shape, with some areas of heavier compression marks on the buttstock. The metal retains some of its finish and there are minor areas of pitting and oxidation. There is also some light verdigris at the rear of the chamber. The bore is in good shape and has minimal erosion, which should make for a nice shooter at the range. This would fit into any Remington or Rolling Block collection. Please see our photos.
