Our Assessment: The Remington 870 Wingmaster stands as one of the most refined pump shotguns of the postwar American sporting era, and examples chambered in 28 gauge occupy a particularly desirable niche within the line. Introduced to deliver smooth handling and upscale finish in a lightweight frame, the 870 Wingmaster quickly earned its reputation for reliability paired with understated elegance. This 1974 example reflects that tradition well, with crisp receiver markings, a deep factory blue, and the classic Wingmaster profile that made the model a staple in upland fields and skeet ranges across the country.

Chambered in 28 gauge, this shotgun represents one of the most efficient and well-balanced small-bore options ever offered by Remington. The 28 gauge cartridge gained widespread favor for its soft recoil, excellent pattern efficiency, and surprising effectiveness on upland game and clay targets, all while allowing the shooter to carry a lighter, livelier gun. The inclusion of two factory barrels, one with a fixed Skeet choke and the other with a fixed Full choke, adds meaningful versatility, allowing this shotgun to transition easily between close-range skeet work and longer field shots without compromising balance or handling.

Condition on this Wingmaster is consistent with careful use and thoughtful ownership. Approximately 95 percent of the original metal finish remains, with light operational wear visible on the magazine tube and subtle fading on the barrel that reads as honest age rather than neglect. The walnut stocks retain a pleasing appearance with scattered handling marks, and the bore remains bright with no erosion and minimal fouling, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, and two barrels are included with the shotgun. We are no longer offering layaway. Please see our high resolution photos and good luck on your bid! MF
