Our Assessment: The Remington 870 Lightweight Special reflects the refinement of the Model 870 platform as it stood in the early 1980s, combining the proven pump action design with a lighter receiver scaled specifically for the 20 gauge. Introduced to offer improved handling and reduced weight without sacrificing durability, the Lightweight Special became a favored configuration for upland and general field use. The 21 inch barrel with a fixed modified choke and ventilated rib places this example squarely in the classic all-around shotgun category, while the serrated rib and receiver top reflect practical design details typical of Remington’s production during this period.
Chambered for both 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch 20 gauge shells, this shotgun benefits from a chambering long appreciated for its efficient balance of recoil, pattern performance, and versatility. This 1984 example presents with a bright bore, strong original blued finish, and well-preserved checkered walnut stocks that retain sharp checkering and only light handling marks. Minor surface oxidation is limited to the rib connections and does not detract from the overall appearance, leaving this as a solid and attractive representative of Remington’s classic sporting shotgun lineage.
