Our Assessment: The Remington Model 700 has long been revered for its strength, accuracy, and versatility, and the BDL VSSF (Varmint Synthetic Stainless Fluted) represented one of the most advanced iterations of the line when introduced in the 1990s. Designed as a high-performance varmint and long-range rifle, the VSSF combined a fluted stainless-steel barrel with a rigid synthetic stock and Remington’s proven 700 action. This chambering, the .220 Swift, adds another layer of desirability and performance—introduced in the 1930s, the Swift was the first factory cartridge to break the 4,000 feet-per-second threshold, earning its reputation as one of the flattest-shooting and fastest commercial cartridges of the 20th century. Its blistering velocity made it legendary for varmint and predator hunting, where precision and explosive impact were paramount.

This example, built in 1997, remains in truly outstanding condition. The 26” fluted stainless barrel shows a mirror-bright bore with sharp rifling, easily rating 10/10, and the stainless finish retains virtually all of its original luster with only minimal signs of handling or bolt wear. The composite stock with spider-webbed gray accents remains solid and clean, providing rigidity and weather resistance that helped define the VSSF series. Topping the rifle is a Leupold VX-3L 4.5-14x50mm scope with the Varmint Hunter’s reticle—a high-end optic tailored for the kind of precision shooting the .220 Swift was designed for. This package ensures not only collector appeal, but also field-ready accuracy for the hunter or shooter who intends to use it.

For those who appreciate rifles that push the envelope of performance, this Model 700 BDL VSSF in .220 Swift represents a perfect storm of speed, accuracy, and rugged design. It remains one of the finest long-range varmint rifles of its era, and with its superb condition, premium Leupold optic, and stainless/fluted build, it is as much a collector’s prize as it is a working tool. A top-tier choice for anyone looking to own a high-performance Remington from the golden era of the 700 line. Please check out our high quality photos and good luck on your bids! – J.D.
