Our Assessment: The Remington Model 58, was Remington’s first gas-operated semi-automatic shotgun and was sold simultaneously with the 11-48. Its gas system is built into the front of the magazine and limits the magazine to two shells. Both the 11-48 and the Model 58 were superceded by the Model 1100 in 1963.
The Model 58 taps gas through two holes in the bottom of the barrel into a chamber which drives an action bar rearward which, in turn, operates the bolt.
This particular Sportsman 58 is chambered in 12 gauge and is choked Skeet. Its most obvious use is the clay breaker that it was intended to be. It might also interest collectors, as it was only made for a few years (1956-63). Please see our photos. -C.B.
