Our Assessment: The Remington 40-XB represents the pinnacle of factory-built American precision rifles, produced by Remington as a competition-grade platform derived directly from the company’s legendary custom shop lineage. The 40-X action earned its reputation on firing lines across the country and in professional precision roles, valued for its exceptional machining, rigidity, and consistency. By the early 2000s, rifles like this example embodied Remington’s commitment to delivering near-custom accuracy straight from the factory, bridging the gap between match competition and serious long-range shooting.
Chambered in 7.62×51 NATO and fitted with a substantial 27.2-inch stainless heavy-contour barrel, this rifle is purpose-built for stability, velocity consistency, and heat management during extended firing strings. The cartridge itself has a long and storied history in both military and competitive contexts, prized for its predictable external ballistics and wide availability of match-grade ammunition. The bore on this example is bright with sharp rifling and shows no erosion, rating a strong 10/10 in this writer’s opinion, underscoring the rifle’s limited use and careful stewardship.
Condition throughout is very strong, with approximately 98 percent of the original metal finish remaining and only minor handling marks present. The stainless finish is intact, and the vivid jeweling on the bolt suggests minimal operational wear. The textured Kevlar composite stock fits the action tightly and remains structurally excellent, offering rigidity and environmental stability, while the included bipod enhances the rifle’s practical precision role. Mechanically sound and complete with factory paperwork, this Remington 40-XB stands as a highly desirable precision rifle that reflects a high-water mark in Remington’s target and tactical production.
