Our Assessment: The Remington Model 720 is a rare and historically significant bolt-action rifle, produced between 1941 and 1944 as an enhancement of the earlier Model 30S. With a total production of approximately 2,427 units, it stands as one of Remington’s most limited-run rifles. Chambered in calibers such as .30-06 Springfield, .270 Winchester, and .257 Roberts, the Model 720 featured barrel lengths of 20, 22, or 24 inches and was offered in various grades, including the 720A, 720AR, and 720S. Its design incorporated a Mauser-type bolt action with a five-round internal box magazine, providing robust performance for both military and sporting applications.

A notable chapter in the Model 720’s history involves its association with the U.S. Navy. In 1942, the Navy acquired approximately 1,000 of these rifles, which were initially stored and later designated for destruction. However, instead of being scrapped, many were repurposed as “Secretary of the Navy Trophy Rifles” and awarded to top Navy and Marine Corps marksmen in competitive shooting events. These trophy rifles are distinguished by unique engravings and markings, such as crossed cannons and “FJA” inspector stamps, making them highly sought after by collectors.

The Remington Model 720’s limited production, combined with its military connections and exceptional craftsmanship, contribute to its status as a prized collectible. Examples in excellent condition, particularly those with documented Navy trophy provenance, are considered valuable assets in the firearms collecting community.
