Our Assessment: The RPB Industries M10 occupies a singular and controversial place in American firearms history, representing the civilian offshoot of the Military Armament Corporation MAC-10 design that emerged during the turbulent late 1960s and 1970s. Produced in the early 1980s under the Cobray banner, these pistols reflect the final era in which open bolt semi automatic firearms were commercially available prior to the 1982 ATF reclassification. As a result, pre ban open bolt M10 pistols like this example are finite in number and closely tied to a brief, now closed chapter of U.S. small arms manufacturing.
Chambered in .45 ACP, a cartridge introduced by John Moses Browning in 1905 and long associated with heavy submachine gun platforms, the M10 pairs substantial projectile mass with a straightforward blowback operating system. The open bolt configuration, in which the bolt closes upon trigger pull, closely mirrors the original military pattern and contributes to the unmistakable mechanical character of the design. The fixed wire front sight and pinhole rear aperture emphasize the utilitarian intent of the platform, while the threaded 5.75 inch barrel preserves the aggressive proportions that defined the MAC family’s visual identity.
This example retains approximately 90 percent of its original black finish with crisp rollmarks visible on the receiver. Handling marks, scattered scratches, and isolated corrosion spots are present, consistent with honest use, and the bore remains mostly bright with sharp rifling and light fouling, rating approximately 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The pistol is accompanied by an assortment of .45 ACP magazines, an additional 9mm upper with magwell adapter, and a 32 round 9mm magazine, offering notable versatility within the MAC pattern ecosystem. As a pre ban open bolt M10, this pistol stands as both a mechanical artifact and a historically significant survivor from one of the most tightly regulated transitions in modern U.S. firearms law.
