Our Assessment: This pre-ban Daewoo K2 is a standout example of South Korea’s most advanced and enduring service rifle, combining the best attributes of the AK, AR-15, and FAL into a hybrid design tailored for the modern battlefield. Manufactured by Daewoo Precision Industries Ltd. and imported into the U.S. before the 1989 ban, the K2 is the civilian-legal version of the standard-issue rifle of the Republic of Korea Army (ROKA), still in use today. Its long-stroke gas piston system is inspired by the AK-47, its rotating bolt mirrors the AR-15, and its rugged build and fixed gas system are all designed for reliability across diverse environments. Chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, this rifle features an 18” barrel (19.5” with flash hider), adjustable peep rear sight, and hooded front post, offering a dependable and familiar sight picture. The addition of a B-Square Weaver-style optics rail atop the receiver makes this a versatile platform for either irons or modern optics. The side-folding stock and ribbed polymer furniture give it a sleek and practical military profile, while the checkered grip and rubber buttpad enhance handling and comfort. The rifle retains about 96% of its original parkerized finish, with light signs of wear and handling throughout. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, rating 9/10, and the action cycles cleanly.
With just one 30-round Lancer magazine included, this K2 is ready for the range or collection shelf. Pre-ban Daewoo rifles are rarely encountered in this configuration, and the K2—especially in folding stock trim—is among the most coveted for its unique history, mechanical excellence, and cross-platform familiarity. Whether you’re a collector of Cold War-era imports, a fan of hybridized military designs, or simply want a rare and reliable rifle in your arsenal, this pre-ban K2 fits the bill. -R.E.
