Our Assessment: This Colt AR-15 SP1, serial number SP160993, was manufactured in 1983 and represents one of the final years of classic SP1 production before later commercial AR variants evolved in configuration. The SP1 was Colt’s civilian counterpart to the M16, retaining the lightweight 20″ barrel profile, slab-side receiver without a forward assist, and overall clean early-pattern lines that defined the original commercial AR-15 aesthetic. By the early 1980s, the SP1 had become firmly established as an iconic American semi-automatic rifle.
Chambered in .223 Remington with a 20″ barrel, this rifle mirrors the full-length configuration associated with early M16-pattern rifles. The .223 Remington cartridge remains one of the most widely adopted intermediate rifle cartridges in modern history, valued for controllable recoil and effective performance. The bore rates an excellent 9.5 out of 10, and the action functions correctly, reflecting strong mechanical condition.
Approximately 98% of the original matte finish remains, presenting a clean and well-preserved example with minimal visible wear. Overall condition is consistent with careful ownership and limited use. As a 1983 Colt SP1 in high condition, this rifle stands as a representative example of late-production, pre-ban era Colt commercial AR-15 manufacturing.
