Our Assessment: The Colt AR-15 SP1, introduced in 1964, was the first civilian AR-15. This 1975 production example represents the classic pre-ban configuration with its slab-side lower, triangular handguards, and A1 fixed stock. At the time, it mirrored the U.S. military’s M16 rifles but was configured for semi-automatic fire only.

As a Colt SP1, it carries strong collector value as both a historic civilian AR and a highly shootable rifle. For enthusiasts of Colt, Vietnam-era small arms, or early AR-15 history, this SP1 is a must-have example of Eugene Stoner’s enduring design. Be sure to check our detailed pictures for a better understanding of the firearm. -C.R.
