Sights / Optics: The front sight is the standard A1 post iron sight and the rear has an iron dual aperture peep sight atop the A1 carry handle.
Grip/Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a standard A1 style pistol grip. The stock is a fixed A1 style stock with a sling ring on the bottom. The forend is the classic two piece A1 style triangular handguard with an internal heat shield. There is moderate surface wear on the furniture with some scuffs and scratches. All of the furniture is in Fair to Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp with light fouling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of finish shows light wear with some surface blemishes from handling and storage. The pins are clean and unmarred. The markings are worn, but legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The safety also functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. We have cleaned this firearm and performed a mechanic’s check but expect many will want to clean the firearm again depending on their standards.

Our Assessment: The Colt AR-15 SP1, introduced in 1964, was the first civilian AR-15. This 1971 production example represents the classic pre-ban configuration with its slab-side lower, triangular handguards, and A1 fixed stock. At the time, it mirrored the U.S. military’s M16 rifles but was configured for semi-automatic fire only.
As a Colt SP1, it carries strong collector value as both a historic civilian AR and a highly shootable rifle. For enthusiasts of Colt, Vietnam-era small arms, or early AR-15 history, this SP1 is a must-have example of Eugene Stoner’s enduring design.
