Our Assessment: The Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .300 H&H Magnum represents one of the most iconic combinations of American rifle craft and classic British magnum performance. Manufactured in 1948, serial number 81987 falls within the highly regarded early postwar production period, when Winchester’s controlled round feed action and forged receiver defined the Model 70’s reputation worldwide. The 26 inch barrel is proper to the .300 H&H chambering, a cartridge introduced in 1925 by Holland & Holland and long favored for its flat trajectory and smooth feeding from long action rifles. In Super Grade trim, with cheekpiece and ebony fore end tip, this rifle reflects Winchester’s premier sporting configuration of the era.
This rifle retains approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish, showing light handling marks, scattered scratches, and very light corrosion freckling. There is some thinning along the top of the barrel and a few white scuffs near the muzzle on the left side. The bolt knob shows honest wear, and the screw heads are lightly tooled but retain serviceable slots. Markings remain clear and legible. The one piece checkered walnut Super Grade stock with semi pistol grip, cheekpiece, straight comb, and rubber recoil pad shows scratches, compression dents, and some finish loss at the ebony tip, but no chips or cracks. Sling mounts are installed, and the length of pull measures 13 1/2 inches. Overall, the stock rates Good to Very Good for a C&R rifle.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with light fouling present. Mechanically, the action and safety function correctly, and a target shoe is installed on the trigger. A Leupold Vari X II 3-9×40 scope is mounted in Redfield mounts, though optic function cannot be guaranteed. In .300 H&H Magnum, the Model 70 earned a lasting reputation as a capable long range and large game rifle, prized for reliable feeding and authoritative performance. This 1948 Pre 64 Super Grade remains a strong representative of Winchester’s magnum sporting heritage. Please see our photos for a better understanding of condition and good luck with your bids! MF
