Our Assessment: The Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade in .220 Swift stands as one of the most celebrated varmint rifle configurations of the postwar era. Manufactured in 1949, serial number 113453 reflects the highly regarded early production period when forged receivers, controlled round feed bolts, and meticulous machining defined Winchester’s flagship sporting rifle. The 26 inch barrel is proper to the .220 Swift chambering, a cartridge introduced by Winchester in 1935 and famed for its exceptional velocity and flat trajectory. In Super Grade trim, with cheekpiece and checkered steel buttplate, this rifle embodies the refined styling and precision orientation that made the Model 70 a benchmark among serious shooters.

This rifle retains approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish, showing light handling marks, scattered scratches, and very light corrosion freckling consistent with careful use. The bolt knob shows honest wear, and the screw heads are lightly tooled but remain serviceable. Markings are clear and legible. The one piece checkered walnut Super Grade stock with semi pistol grip, cheekpiece, straight comb, and sling mounts shows scratches and compression dents but no chips or cracks, rating Very Good Plus for a C&R rifle. The length of pull measures 13 1/2 inches. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with light fouling present.

Mechanically, the action and safety function correctly. The rifle is currently equipped with a Jewell trigger, and the original trigger is included. A Leupold Vari X III 6.5 20 scope is mounted in Redfield mounts, and a Lyman Model 48 receiver sight is included but not installed, along with the original rear sight. The .220 Swift earned its reputation as one of the fastest commercial cartridges of its day, prized for long range varmint shooting and precision work. In Super Grade configuration, the 1949 Pre 64 Model 70 offers both performance and classic Winchester craftsmanship in a highly desirable chambering.
