Serial Number: 52402

Year of Manufacture: 1946

Caliber: .270 Winchester Centerfire (WCF)

Action Type: Bolt Action Rifle with Internal Hinged Floorplate Magazine

Barrel Length: 24”

Sights/Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base integral to the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for mounting optics. The left side of the receiver is installed with a Griffin & Howe scope base fitted with a vintage Lyman Alaskan with T-Post reticle. The sight picture is clear. There scope rates in Excellent condition.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with a pistol grip, fluted straight comb, checkered steel buttplate and sling swivels front and rear. There are scattered nicks, dings, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is generally well defined. The LOP measures 13 5/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has wear around the edges with well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original, the bolt is serial-matching.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore, mostly at the muzzle-end. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates about 6.5 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish is strong with only some minor thinning on the leading edges. The Winchester Proof on the receiver has been double stamped but we believe this to be a factory error. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads are sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear of the bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, the safety is ON, blocking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope.

Our Assessment: This 1946 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle is a prime example of why the pre-64 Model 70 is regarded as “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” Produced during the first full year of post-war civilian production, this rifle represents the early return to Winchester’s hand-finished, high-quality sporting arms after WWII. Chambered in the versatile and highly respected .270 Winchester—made famous by Jack O’Connor—this Model 70 combines outstanding field performance with historical significance. The .270 WCF remains one of the most capable cartridges for North American game, and this early production example is both collectible and entirely practical for the modern hunter.

What makes this rifle stand out is its period-correct Griffin & Howe side mount and the inclusion of a vintage Lyman Alaskan scope with a T-post reticle, an iconic optic setup for serious mid-century hunters. The finish retains about 95% of its original blue with expected edge wear and use marks. The bore shows some light erosion near the muzzle but retains strong rifling and remains very serviceable. The walnut stock shows honest use with attractive checkering and a solid fit throughout. Whether you’re a Winchester collector, a fan of classic hunting rifles, or someone looking for a historically rich .270 for the field, this rifle is a fine example of early post-war craftsmanship and hunting heritage. With its classic lines and vintage glass, it’s as much a piece of American sporting history as it is a capable tool for the woods. Please see our photos and good luck on your bid! – L.S.
