Our Assessment: This Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight, manufactured in 1955 and chambered in the powerful .358 Winchester, is a rare and highly desirable variation of what has long been called “The Rifleman’s Rifle.” The Featherweight model, introduced in 1952, offered all the precision and quality of the standard Model 70 but in a lighter, trimmer package designed for the serious hunter. The .358 Win. chambering—introduced in 1955—makes this a particularly scarce example, as few were produced compared to more common calibers. With its potent terminal performance and moderate recoil, the .358 Win. is well-suited for elk, bear, and heavy timber whitetail hunting.
This rifle retains about 95% of its original blue finish, with light wear on the high edges and operational areas, and it features a bright, sharp bore that rates a solid 9/10. The stock shows honest use, with scattered compressions and handling marks, and has been fitted with a period-correct Pachmayr White Line pad for added comfort. Mechanically sound with clear markings and a crisp action, this Model 70 embodies the craftsmanship and functional elegance that made Winchester’s pre-64 rifles legendary. Whether you’re a collector of classic American bolt guns, a hunter who appreciates vintage quality, or someone seeking a rare caliber in a historic platform, this Featherweight .358 is an outstanding piece with enduring value.
