Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with ”MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / — WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL—-” “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK ” logo and “MODEL—70–300 H&H MAGNUM”  The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER” ®. The right side of the chamber is marked with the serial number “434153”.  The bolt is etched marked with the matching serial number.  The rubber buttpad is marked “DECELERATOR”  

Barrel Length: 26 Inches 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade sight fixed to the top of a serrated ramp.  There is a dovetailed notch in the barrel for a rear iron sight but no sight is present. There are tapped and unfilled screw holes in the top of the receiver. 

Stock Configuration & Condition:  The stock is a replacement, non-Winchester one-piece checkered High-grade “Tiger-striped” Walnut with a straight comb and cheekpiece, Satin finish with a capped semi pistol grip, Rosewood tipped forearm, rubber buttpad, and two sling mounts. As a replacement however, it is a beautiful stock with exceptional wood grain.  The LOP measures approximately 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the rubber buttpad. There is virtually no wear or compression marks on the stock. The walnut stock is in Excellent condition.  There are no chips or cracks present.

Finish Originality: Original metal/ Stock original, as replaced

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and shiny and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. The bottom metal and the trigger guard are after-market engraved.  The bolt handle knob has lost the majority of its finish. The finish is thinning along the barrel and on the top of the receiver and turning to a plum patina.  The screw heads are sharp or lightly tool marked. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine condition as a C&R.

Mechanics: The action functions as intended.  We did not fire this rifle.  As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment:  The Winchester Model 70 has long been known as the “Rifleman’s Rifle,” earning its place as one of the most respected bolt-action sporting rifles of the 20th century. First introduced in 1936, the Model 70 combined controlled-feed reliability, excellent accuracy, and fine craftsmanship, making it a favorite of hunters worldwide. Chambered here in .300 H&H Magnum, it is an ideal rifle for deer, elk, moose, rhino, elephant or anything else that you don’t want to stalk after you shoot it!

The Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 from 1958 represents a pinnacle of American rifle craftsmanship during the golden era of firearm production. Introduced in 1936, the Model 70 quickly garnered a reputation for its exceptional accuracy, reliability, and elegant design. The 1958 variant, manufactured before Winchester’s transition to cost-saving measures in 1964, retains the finest features and quality construction that made the Pre-64 Model 70 legendary among hunters, shooters and collectors.

Mechanically, the rifle functions properly with a crisp trigger and working safety. The rifle has a custom high-grade non-Winchester stock and a custom engraved bottom metal and trigger guard.  The minor cosmetic wear on the finish shouldn’t dissuade any hunter from recognizing and owning one of the most iconic hunting rifles in history.  It is a highly desirable Pre-64 Model 70 in a caliber capable of taking any game on the planet.
