Our Assessment: Manufactured in 1946, this Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 Standard Rifle represents early postwar production of what would become one of the most respected American bolt action sporting rifles ever built. Serial number 60390 places it firmly in the immediate post World War II era, when Winchester resumed civilian production with the same forged receiver, controlled round feed claw extractor, and coned breech system that defined the Model 70’s reputation. Chambered in .30-06 Springfield, also known historically as .30 Gov’t ’06 and adopted by the U.S. military in 1906, the rifle is fitted with a proper 24 inch barrel and retains its classic beaded blade front sight on a hooded ramp and folding adjustable rear sight.

This rifle retains approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish, showing light scratches, handling marks, and scattered light corrosion freckling consistent with careful use. The markings remain clear, and the screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong, serviceable slots. The one piece hand checkered walnut stock with pistol grip, fluted straight comb, sling studs, and checkered steel buttplate shows scattered handling wear and compression dents, along with a small round patch at the heel and a minor inlet on the left side cut for a receiver sight. There has been minor refinish work performed. The length of pull measures 13 1/2 inches. Overall, the stock rates Good Plus.

The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion with only light fouling present. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, and the three position wing safety at the rear of the bolt operates as designed, allowing safe, trigger block, and fire positions. The rifle is fitted with a Leupold Vari X II 3-9×40 scope in Weaver style mounts and rings, though optic function cannot be guaranteed. In .30-06 Springfield, the Model 70 became a trusted companion for generations of hunters, and this 1946 Pre 64 example reflects the enduring strength and balance that secured its place in American sporting history.
