Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Bausch & Lomb Balvar 5 2.5-5x scope, with a fine crosshair reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows light wear, with a few minor scratches scattered throughout, along with some finish thinning on the zoom dial. Overall, the scope rates in Very Good condition. The scope is mounted on a one-piece Buehler adjustable scope mount, and sits in 1″ rings.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece smooth walnut stock, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted raised comb, vented Pachmayr rubber buttpad, and sling rings front and rear. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with scattered scratches, dings, and compressions throughout. The oil finish on the stock has darkened with age, but it is largely intact throughout. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some stubborn fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light wear, with a few light scratches and dings scattered throughout the metal surfaces. The bolt shows operational wear, along with the other friction surfaces of the action. The bluing is deep and dark throughout, with only minor thinning on the edge of the muzzle. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are tooled, but retain serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the scope as mentioned above.

Our Assessment: By 1951 the Pre-’64 Winchester Model 70 had already secured its place as the “Rifleman’s Rifle,” and examples from this era continue to exemplify the craftsmanship and design quality that have made these guns enduringly collectible. The controlled-round-feed action, forged and machined steel components, and balanced stock geometry created a platform that defined American sporting rifles for generations and remains the benchmark by which many are judged today.

The .270 Winchester chambering adds an important historical note to this rifle’s appeal. Introduced in 1925, the .270 quickly became a favorite among Western hunters for its flat trajectory, mild recoil, and effective performance on deer, sheep, antelope, and similar game. Its widespread adoption was influenced heavily by writers and hunters of the mid-20th century, and its use in the Model 70 cemented a pairing that became almost iconic in North American hunting culture.

This 1951 rifle presents with strong original bluing, a well-preserved walnut stock showing only honest handling marks, and a bright bore that remains in fine shooting condition. The period Bausch & Lomb Balvar scope and Buehler mount add to the rifle’s vintage character, completing a classic mid-century sporting rig. For collectors of early post-war Model 70s, enthusiasts of traditional big-game rifles, or those who appreciate the Pre-’64 action in its most quintessential chambering, this example offers both mechanical integrity and historical resonance.
