Our Assessment: The Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 in .220 Swift represents one of the most sought after varmint rifle configurations of the classic era. Manufactured in 1954 and bearing matching serial numbers on both receiver and bolt, this rifle reflects the controlled round feed, forged receiver craftsmanship that defined Winchester’s flagship bolt action prior to 1964. The 26 inch barrel is correctly roll marked “MODEL 70 – 220 SWIFT” along with the New Haven address and Winchester proof steel designation, and both barrel and receiver carry the circled WP proofs. Chambered in .220 Swift, introduced in 1935 and long celebrated for its exceptional velocity and flat trajectory, this configuration was purpose built for precision shooting at extended distances.

This rifle retains approximately 90 percent of its original blued finish, showing light scratches, scattered handling marks, and minor corrosion freckling consistent with careful use. The markings remain clear and legible, and the screw heads are lightly tooled but retain strong, serviceable slots. The one piece checkered walnut stock with semi pistol grip, fluted raised comb, checkered steel buttplate, and sling rings front and rear shows light wear with minor compressions, small nicks, and light scratches, rating Very Good overall. The length of pull measures 13 5/8 inches from the trigger to the back of the buttplate.

The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, with only light fouling present. Mechanically, the action and safety function correctly, and the trigger breaks light and crisp. A Leupold LPS 3.5-14×50 scope is mounted in Leupold lever lock mounts, complementing the rifle’s long range orientation, though optic function cannot be guaranteed. As a 1954 Pre 64 Model 70 in .220 Swift with matching bolt and strong bore, this rifle remains a classic example of mid century Winchester precision sporting design.
