Our Assessment: This pre-64 Winchester Model 1894 Carbine represents the classic postwar continuation of one of America’s most iconic lever-action rifles. Manufactured in 1948, this example falls squarely into the highly regarded pre-64 production era, when Winchester’s machining, steel quality, and overall fit and finish were still held to traditional standards. The 20 inch round barrel carbine configuration reflects the quintessential Model 94 layout, prized for its balance, fast handling, and practical field use in woods and saddle country alike.

Chambered in .30 W.C.F., commonly known as .30-30 Winchester, this rifle is paired with a cartridge that had already earned a legendary reputation by the mid-20th century. The combination of moderate recoil, effective terminal performance, and compatibility with the Model 94’s tubular magazine made it a mainstay for deer hunters across North America. The factory iron sights consist of a beaded front blade and a spring leaf rear with elevator, providing a simple and effective sight picture consistent with the rifle’s intended purpose. Internally, the bore remains bright with well-defined rifling and no erosion noted, with only stubborn fouling present, earning a strong 9 out of 10 rating.

Overall condition is Very Good for a C&R rifle, retaining approximately 85 percent of its original blued finish. The metal surfaces show scattered scratches, handling marks, light corrosion spots, and some thinning at the leading edges, all consistent with honest field use. The walnut stocks have seen light refinish work and display compression dents, handling wear, oil darkening, and localized damage near the buttplate from a previously installed slip-on recoil pad, placing them in Good condition for a refinish. Markings remain clear, screws are lightly tooled but serviceable, and the action functions correctly with a crisp trigger and proper operation of both the half-cock and lever safety. Taken together, this rifle presents as a solid, well-used pre-64 Winchester carbine that retains strong mechanical integrity and enduring historical appeal.
