Markings: There is no visible import mark . The top of the receiver is marked with the cypher of King Carlos I “crown / IC”. The left side of the receiver is marked with 2 stampings, “ESPINGARDA PORTUGUEZA 6.5 MOD. 1904. / DEUTSCHE WAFFEN-UND MUNITIONSFABRIKEN BERLIN.”. The right side of the receiver and the top of the bolt handle are each marked with the serial number. The left side of the stock (below the receiver), bolt assembly and bottom metal are each marked with numbers that do not correlate to the serial number. The top of the bolt handle knob is marked “circled P”. There are a few other small stampings on the metal.
Barrel Length: Approximately 29 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set atop a ramped base. The rear sight is a “V” notched blade attached to a sliding escalator that is marked from “2-20”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, nosecap with bayonet lug, hole for the included cleaning rod, barrel band with sling loop, through bolt, marking disk, sling loop base under the butt and a metal buttplate. The buttplate shows scrapes, areas of surface erosion and discoloration. The wood shows several scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Many have damaged small portions of surface wood. These marks have been oiled over. The most prominent marks are on the left side of the grip. The LOP measures 12 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been treated with cold blue.
Bore Condition: The muzzle and grooves are grey. The rifling is deep. There is light intermittent erosion in the grooves and a small amount of erosion at the muzzle.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. The metal has been treated with cold blue. The left side of the barrel, at the wood line, has a small amount of pin prick surface erosion showing through the cold blue finish. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches and discoloration. The screw heads show use & discoloration. The markings are clear & deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with an unmarked Portuguese rifle sling. It shows scrapes, discoloration and light surface loss. The buckle shows light scrapes & light oxidation. Overall it is in about Very Good condition.
Our Assessment: This Portuguesel 1904 Mauser-Vergueiro was made in Germany by Deutsche Waffen Munitionsfabriken. It is basically a Mauser that uses a Mannlicher style bolt. The bolt handle is located forward of the receiver’s split bridge when closed. It is a scarce rifle as it is still chambered in 6.5x58mm. Most of these rifles were Arsenal converted by the Libson Arsenal to fire 8mm Mauser out of a shorter barrel. The converted rifles are designated as the Model 1904/39. This Portugese Mauser has nice deep markings and will add to your Mauser collection.
