Our Assessment: The Peruvian Model 1909 Mauser is one of the finest export rifles ever produced by the Mauser Oberndorf factory in Germany, based on the proven German Gewehr 98 platform but tailored to the specific needs of the Peruvian military. Chambered in 7.65x53mm Argentine, the M1909 combined German precision manufacturing with South American military tradition. These rifles are renowned for their exceptional fit and finish, and many were issued with distinctive features like the Lange Vizier “roller coaster” sight and parade-style hardware, including bayonet lugs and hooks for ceremonial attachments. This example, serial number 19190, was manufactured between 1910 and 1914 and remains in remarkably well-preserved condition. All serialized parts are matching to the receiver, including the bolt and stock, which bears a crisp Mauser banner on the right side. The rifle retains about 96% of its blue and in-the-white finish, with only light thinning and minor handling wear. The stock shows only minor pressure marks and tiny chips but no cracks, rating Very Good to Excellent overall. The bore, though gray with some erosion and stubborn fouling, retains strong rifling and rates a respectable 7/10, which is typical of black powder-era ammunition use. The rifle is accompanied by a proper M1909 Peruvian quillback bayonet manufactured by Simson of Suhl, a rare and correct accessory that matches the rifle’s presentation perfectly. The bayonet and scabbard are serial-matched and in excellent condition, further elevating this ensemble’s collectibility.

Whether you are a Mauser enthusiast, a student of South American military history, or a collector of turn-of-the-century export rifles, this Peruvian M1909 stands as a superb example. With matching numbers, a high degree of finish remaining, and the original bayonet included, this rifle is as complete as they come and reflects the pinnacle of Mauser export quality during Germany’s golden era of arms production.
