Markings: The left of the barrel is marked with the date code, proofs, serial number, company logo, “BLACK POWDER ONLY – ITLAY/15 / PEDERSOLI – CAL .451”, and “Sir Joseph Whitworths Patent Rifling – 451 Cal.”. The top of the barrel is marked “PARKER-HALE LTD. BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND” in front of the rear sight and ‘WHITWORTH PATENT” behind it. The right side of the barrel is marked “NAVY ARMS”. The lockplate is marked crown over “P-H” behind the hammer and “WHITWORTH” in front.
Barrel Length: 36″
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a globe with a beaded post, it is dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a two-position ladder sight. It presents “V” notches in both positions. The rear sight is housed in a base fixed to the barrel.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered wood with a straight comb, straight grip, brass nosecap, three case color barrel bands, and a brass buttplate. The right side of the butt is marked “PARKER / HALE LTD” in a circle. There are a few little scuffs, compressions, and draglines. The most noticeable defect is a scratch on the left side just behind the middle barrel band. Some of the most noticeable defects are on the belly of the buttstock and on the comb at the right front. There are some little spots of stubborn residue, most noticeable on the butt. The checkering is intact and attractive. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures approximately 13″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has scuffs, draglines, and a bit of tarnish. Overall, the stock is in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The grooves are bright and the lands are semi-bright, the rifling is strong. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered minor marks on the barrel, hardly noticeable. The base of the barrel has turned plum. The brass components have some draglines, scuffs, and a bit of tarnish. The case color and bluing are still strong. There are a few spots of stubborn residue. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions properly. The hammer has a half-cock safety notch. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is a ramrod stored under the barrel and a tan cloth sling. There is scattered light wear and discoloration to the align but no rips or tears.
Our Assessment: In the year 1854 sir. Joseph Whitworth, was commissioned by the English war office to design a rifle to replace the Enfield pattern 53, he started to work on a .451 caliber rifle, equipped with a barrel having a hexagonal bore profile. The rifle created outperformed all competitors during the tests made in 1859 and enabling Queen Victoria to easily hit a target at 366 meters (400 yards), during the first meeting of the British rifle association. Also used during the American Civil War, the rifle equipped the sharpshooters of the confederate army, hence the name “Whitworth sharpshooters”. Please see our photos and good luck!
