Our Assessment: This Pedersoli Model 1862 Sharps Confederate Carbine represents a faithful modern reproduction of one of the most distinctive breechloading carbines of the American Civil War era. Patterned after the Confederate-produced S.C. Robinson Arms Manufactory carbines of Richmond, Virginia, this example reflects the ingenuity and scarcity-driven manufacturing of the Southern war effort, where Sharps-style carbines were copied to supply cavalry units. Pedersoli’s 2005 production captures the correct profile, markings, and handling characteristics while benefiting from modern metallurgy and precision manufacturing.

Chambered in .54 caliber and configured for paper cartridge percussion ignition, the carbine utilizes the classic Sharps falling block action, actuated by a lever that both opens the breech and shears the cartridge tail for ignition. The 22 inch barrel balances well with the compact cavalry configuration, and the simple blade front sight and fixed V-notch rear are appropriate to the period and intended use. The bore is exceptionally bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, a standout feature that supports the rifle’s excellent mechanical condition and accuracy potential for black powder shooting.

Overall, this example presents in excellent condition, retaining approximately 99 percent of its original blue and case color finish with only minimal handling and operational wear visible. The walnut stocks remain crisp and clean, complemented by the brass furniture and correct cavalry saddle ring assembly. Mechanically sound and visually striking, this Sharps carbine stands as a high-quality historical reproduction from Davide Pedersoli, offering both collector appeal and authentic black powder shooting experience rooted in Civil War history.
