Our Assessment: Modern problems require modern solutions… or, in this case, solutions stemming from 100 years ago. The Pedersoli Howdah pistol is slightly misleading because it takes inspiration from the 1920’s favorite Ithaca Auto & Burglar handheld shotgun. The Auto & Burglar design causes people to pause not because it is a Flues Model, 20-gauge shotgun, but because its side-by-side barrel is only ten inches long. This relatively short shotgun possesses an interesting history on top of an interesting look. Capable of holding a load of 16 buckshot, people considered these firearms excellent sources for protection. These short shotguns sold for $27.62 in 1928, and weighed in at around 4.25 pounds. Ithaca discontinued this model in 1934 when the legal minimum barrel length for shotguns changed to 18 inches, but the short shotgun would find a loyal following amongst the present and future firearm nerds. Because of those pesky things called laws that govern firearms today, Pedersoli recreates the Ithaca Auto & Burglar with a modern flare and adherence to those laws. This short gun is categorized as a pistol thanks to its rifled barrels and ability to take .45 LC ammunition. The beautiful wooden stock and case-hardened receiver harken back to ye olden days of firearms artistry, but it doesn’t lose any of the necessary function. So whether you want a new safe queen for your collection, or a new tool to try out and show off at the range, the Pedersoli Howdah firearm is a perfect choice for you.
