Markings: The derringers have the same markings, however, the typeface is different. The top of the rib is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.”. The underside of the barrel and the left side of the frame under the grip is marked with the serial number.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade integral to the barrel. The rear sight is a large “U” groove in the boss at the top rear of the barrel at the hinge.
Stock Configuration & Condition: Both sets of grips are two-piece checkered black hard rubber. Both sets have some scattered light marks and some rub wear and flat spots to the checkering. The grips on serial number 469 have a bit more wear with a few scattered little scratches and dings. Neither set has chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Very Good and Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bores of serial number 293 are gray and the rifling is worn and shallow, there are scattered areas of pitting and erosion. The bores of serial number 469 is light gray and the rifling is lightly worn. There is erosion but less compared to 293.
Overall Condition: These handguns 40% of their metal finish. There is scattered mottled patina and mottled finish loss. 469 has more finish loss. 293 has some scattered spots of erosion. There are some scattered nicks, scuffs, and a few little hairline scratches. The screwheads show light use with heavier wear on 469. The markings are clear. Overall, the pistols rate in about Good-Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The actions function correctly. We did not fire these handguns. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a green felt-lined display case, a deck of cards, two dice, five poker chips, and 13 rounds of .41 rimfire.
Our Assessment: Shortly after the American Civil War, a New York dentist-turned-firearms inventor named William H. Elliot designed a revolutionary pocket pistol to fire the .41 Short rimfire caliber metallic cartridge. At the time, it was the most powerful small handgun cartridge on the market. This compact but hard-hitting pistol was immediately embraced by riverboat gamblers, ladies of the night, messengers, travelers, shopkeepers and anyone else who needed an easily concealable, large-caliber weapon for self defense. Its novel design featured twin, over-and-under barrels that swung open from a top hinge for loading and cartridge extraction, a “spur” trigger and large, comfortable grips. This was one, but not the first, of the more than 130 firearms patents Dr. Elliot would be granted over the last half of the nineteenth century. The Elliot’s Over/Under Derringers were made by Remington from 1867 to 1935, with the barrel address changing as the name of the company changed, and with the address moving from the web between the barrels to the top rib. They made over 150,000 and they were offered in either blue, nickel, or a combination of the two. This is a pair of intermediate variation Remington Arms Co. derringers with the marking on the top of the barrel. The pistols appear in about Very Good condition with a nice patina and hard rubber grips. This a good example of a vintage firearm type favored by gamblers, lawmen, and ladies of the night in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This one comes with a cool display case with cards, dice, and poker chips, it even has a green felt lining to round out its poker table aesthetic.
