Year of Manufacture: 1898. This is the first year of production for the Model 1895 Cavalry Carbine.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted V post atop a small base. The rear sight is a U notched blade attached to a sliding escalator assembly.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are 2 piece smooth wood with a pistol grip, cut out for the bolt handle, scallop for the magazine cutoff, finger grooves, barrel band with sling loop, sling point under the butt, reinforcing screw in the butt, and a metal buttplate. The wood shows numerous scratches and compression marks. The LOP measures 13 1/4 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows oxidation and wear. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus condition as an antique.

Bore Condition: The grooves are dark. The rifling is deep with dull edges. There is erosion in the bore, mostly in the grooves.
In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates 6.5 out of 10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 50% of its current metal finish. The metal has been treated with cold blue. The metal shows scrapes, small scratches, and varying degrees of discoloration from oxidation. The barrel shows light surface erosion. The screw heads show heavy use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as an antique.

Our Assessment: This Norwegian Krag-Jorgensen is a Rare Model 1895 Cavalry Carbine. It was made the Kongsberg Arsenal back in 1898 which was the first year of production. It has deep markings on the receiver which include the Kongsberg Arsenal “crowned K” and the “1898” date of manufacture. The rifle has matching numbers on the receiver, bolt handle, rear sight, rear sight base, barrel band, trigger guard, and buttplate.
This 1895 Cavalry Carbine is chambered in 6.5x55mm which is a flat shooting Military cartridge. This Krag is an Antique so No FFL is required.
