Our Assessment: This is not your average kit build. Professionally assembled by Mario Fraire of Piece of History Firearms in Tucson, Arizona—widely regarded as one of the finest AK builders in the country—this Bulgarian AK-74 is a meticulous fusion of Cold War authenticity and American craftsmanship. Built from a carefully selected and matched Bulgarian parts kit on the highly respected (and now discontinued) Nodak Spud NDS-2 receiver, this rifle is about as close as you can get to the real-deal military AK-74 while remaining in semi-auto configuration.
What sets this build apart are the details: the original Bulgarian chrome-lined barrel, matching bolt, carrier, and top cover, and the correct Izhmash-marked pistol grip that pays homage to the Soviet lineage of the design. The combination of black synthetic stock components and traditional wooden handguards gives it a hybrid aesthetic that reflects the transitional character of late-service AKs. With a 9/10 bore and a crisp action, it’s as shootable as it is collectible.
Whether you’re an AK purist, a Cold War reenactor, or a modern enthusiast looking for a top-tier example of the 5.45×39 platform, this Bulgarian AK-74 build checks every box. With Nodak receivers no longer in production and kit builds of this quality growing scarce, rifles like this are becoming harder to find—and even harder to replicate.
