Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “HENRY’S PATENT OCT 16 1860 / MANUFACTURED BY NAVY ARMS CO. RIDGEFIELD, N.J.” and “CAL. 44-40” on the left at the rear. The bottom of the lower tang is marked with the serial number.
Barrel Length: 24”
Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a flip-up ladder sight dovetailed into the barrel and a fixed brass blade front sight installed in a slot on the end of the barrel. The ladder sight has markings from “2-8” and also has a fixed “point blank” sight for when the ladder is in the down position.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The buttstock on this rifle is smooth wood with a straight grip and a crescent brass buttplate. There is a sling swivel on the left side of the stock and follower spring housing with an attached leather sling. The sling has verdigris on the brass pieces and the leather shows scattered scuffs and scratches with a few light tears. The stock has scattered compressions, nicks, and draglines. The buttstock appears to have been refinished at some point, as is evident from the pooling that can be seen at the front of the wrist and the rear of the buttstock near the plate. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate, which shows some light marks throughout and light tarnish at the heel and toe. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition as likely refinished.

Bore Condition: The bore is somewhat bright and the rifling is well defined. There is some scattered erosion and light pitting.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 89% of its metal finish. The receiver shows swirl lines, light stains, and light tarnish throughout. The barrel shows some infrequently scattered small nicks and faint scratches. The lever shows some light oxidation on the inside of the loop. There is standard operational wear. The screw heads are tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition. (See Mechanics)
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. However, there are kinks in the follower spring and the barrel bushing detent is weak and the barrel sleeve shifts out of place easily. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is the previously mentioned sling and a brown leather fringe soft case.
Our Assessment: As paraphrased from the Uberti website: “Tyler Henry of New Haven Arms Company designed the Model 1860 just in time for the Civil War. Only 1,700 of these repeating rifles were issued to Union troops, but the rifle’s reputation quickly grew. Southerners dubbed it “that tarnation Yankee rifle that they load on Sunday and shoot all week”. The Henry was also used in the fight at Little BigHorn. Unfortunately for Custer, all the Henry’s used were by Indians.” With its 24” barrel, this rifle holds 13 cartridges in the magazine, and is great for those Cowboy Action team events where you have to split a log or knock down 50 targets.
