Action Type: Bolt Action with Internal Magazine Fed By Stripper Clips. The magazine has a hinged floorplate.
Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number “40260” and stacked cannonballs representing the Kokura Arsenal. The top of the chamber ring is marked with a Japanese Chrysanthemum and three Japanese characters represent “99” and “Type” as read from left to right. The underside of the bolt handle, front of the safety, firing pin, side of the extractor, and the bottom of the bayonet lug are matched to the rifle and marked “260”. The back of the dust cover is marked “02”. The rear of the bolt handle and underside of the aircraft sight have small stampings.
Barrel Length: 25 ½”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” dovetailed into a banded rectangular base on the barrel, the protective ears have broken off. The rear sight is a ladder sight that is screwed to the barrel. The rear of the ladder has a fixed peep sight for use when the ladder is folded down. When the ladder is folded up, there is an aperture in the center of the slider for use. The sides of the ladder are marked from “3” to “15”. The slider has spring-loaded latches for raising and lowering the slider and locking it into position. The ladder has folding anti-aircraft wings attached, each marked “2” and “3”, and with a “V” notch on the outside edge (lower edge when unfolded to the horizontal position).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is smooth wood with finger grooves, metal nosecap with a hole for the included cleaning rod, pistol grip, straight comb, metal buttplate, two sling loops, and a folding wire monopod. The buttstock is made from two pieces of wood, with the bottom piece starting near the bottom of the pistol grip. The lower tang wraps around the front of the bottom piece to better secure the piece. There are numerous scattered scrapes, compressions, impact marks, scratches, nicks, scuffs, and numerous spots of scattered discoloration. Some of these defects have removed light portions of surface wood. The majority of the defects have colored with age. The LOP measures 12 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows a thick patina with light erosion and light scabbing. The buttplate is in about Good to Very Good condition. The stocks are in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark with worn rifling and erosion throughout.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its metal finish. There is patina and oxidation throughout the metal plus some light scabs and a few pinpricks. There is some thinning on the edges. There is erosion, most noticeable on the dust cover and bottom metal assembly. There are a few scrapes and scuffs. The monopod and anti-aircraft sights are intact and the dust cover is present. The protective ears of the front sight have broken off. The screwheads show use with serviceable slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is a cleaning rod stored under the barrel.
Our Assessment: This rifle was made by the Nagoya Arsenal between 1939 and 1945. Its chrysanthemum on the receiver is intact, as are the anti-aircraft ears on its ladder sight and the folding monopod. This rifle is rare in that many chrysanthemums were ground off or defaced by the surrendering troops, and the anti-aircraft sights were easily damaged or snapped off. It also has a dust cover which are typically discarded due to clanking around and making noise when soldiers were out in the field. It has many strong historic markings including matching serial numbers on many of the parts. The rifle is in about Very Good condition with about 75% of its finish remaining. Besides its anti-aircraft sights, it also comes with a cleaning rod stored under the barrel. A collector of WWII or Japanese weapons will find this rifle highly desirable.
