Our Assessment: This Mauser Standard-Modell, manufactured in 1934, is a highly desirable bolt-action rifle that bridges the gap between the commercial sporting Mausers and the iconic K98k military rifles that followed. Chambered in 7.92x57mm (8mm Mauser), the Standard-Modell served as a precursor to Germany’s rearmament, often issued to paramilitary and training units prior to the official adoption of the Karabiner 98k. This particular example bears the Mauser banner, early “1934” date stamp, and the “CH.d.A.” cartouche—indicating issue to the Chef des Ausbildungswesens der obersten S.A.-Führung, or Chief of Training of the S.A. (Sturmabteilung)—a rare and significant marking tying it directly to the paramilitary wing of the early N@zi regime. This rifle is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 45% of its original blued finish with thinning across exposed surfaces and freckling from age and use. The bore is in remarkable condition for its age, light gray with strong rifling and only faint erosion, rating a solid 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. The bolt is not matched to the receiver, but the rest of the rifle retains matching numbers. The two-piece stock remains structurally sound with no cracks, only scattered pressure marks, scratches, and minor chips from honest use. The mechanical function is solid and the action cycles properly, making it a fully functional historical piece. The rifle is complete with its cleaning rod, bayonet lug, and leather sling.

Collectors of early German military and paramilitary firearms will recognize the historical importance of this Mauser Standard-Modell—particularly with the rare “CH.d.A.” S.A. marking and 1934 production date. These rifles played a key role in Germany’s clandestine rearmament leading up to World War II and served as a template for the K98k. With its solid bore, crisp markings, and largely original condition, this example offers outstanding historical value and would make a fine addition to any collection of pre-war or Third Reich-era arms. -R.E.
