Our Assessment:  This Marlin Model 1893 Takedown represents a classic early twentieth century American sporting rifle built during Marlin’s strongest period of lever action production. Introduced as a robust alternative to contemporary Winchester designs, the Model 1893 earned a reputation for strength, smooth operation, and excellent accuracy. The takedown configuration added practical versatility for transport and storage, while the long 28 inch half octagon barrel reflects the period preference for balance, sight radius, and steady offhand shooting.

Chambered in .32-40 Winchester, this rifle is closely associated with the black powder and early smokeless transition era. Originally developed as a target cartridge, the .32-40 gained widespread popularity for its mild recoil, accuracy, and effectiveness on deer sized game. The barrel on this example is marked for black powder use, reinforcing its early production intent. The bore remains bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, showing only minor fouling and rating a strong 9 out of 10, a notable attribute for a rifle of this age.

Overall condition is good, retaining approximately 75 percent of its original metal finish. The barrel has aged to a blue gray patina with scattered scratches and light corrosion staining, while the receiver shows patches of worn bluing and muted but visible case color on the lever and hammer. The checkered walnut stocks display honest field wear, including flattened checkering, light finish loss, a chipped toe, and a small crack at the upper tang, yet remain solid and visually appropriate for the rifle’s age. Mechanically, the action functions correctly with a crisp trigger and proper half cock safety, presenting this rifle as a well preserved and highly representative Marlin 1893 takedown in a desirable early sporting chambering.
