Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889. AUG. 1. 1893” and “30-30.” at the receiver. The left shoulder of the barrel next to the rear sight is marked “SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL”.  The top of the receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY”. The upper tang is marked with a star and “MARLIN / MODEL 93”. The lower tang is marked with the serial number “437383”

Barrel Length: 26″ Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a forward sloping blade slotted in a base that is dovetailed to the receiver. The rear sight is a buckhorn with a V-notch and an elevator piece that is dovetailed to the barrel. The upper tang is drilled, tapped and filled in two places for the installation of a tang sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a capped forearm, straight grip, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. There is a Marlin Bullseye present in the belly. The stocks have scattered compressions, draglines, dings, and scratches, most notably on the forearm. There is a crack in the right side of the buttstock. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows a thick, dark patina with scattered nicks, scratches, and some scabbing. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is dark with erosion throughout. The rifling is deep. Our M.E. gauge reads 0.0.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its metal finish. The leading edges of the barrel have thinned. The case coloring on the receiver is visible but faint. There is scattered oxidation throughout with some pitting on the bottom of the magazine tube at the front. The forearm cap shows a dark patina. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with deep slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Good-Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Taken from Brophy, “The Marlin Model ‘93 Rifle is the ideal rifle for hunting all species of big game found on the North American continent. The barrels are made of Special Smokeless Steel which permits the use of high power smokeless loads with metal jacketed bullets.” This example retains about 70% original finish.
