Our Assessment: Marlin’s 444XLR represents the modern evolution of the original 1960s “big-bore lever gun” concept that made the .444 Marlin famous as one of the hardest-hitting straight-walled cartridges available to lever-action hunters. By 2006, when this rifle was produced, Marlin had updated the platform with stainless steel construction, weather-resistant laminate stocks, and the company’s mature machining techniques, resulting in a powerful, corrosion-resistant hunting rifle designed for hard use in deep woods, wet climates, and heavy brush. The XLR series in particular was known for offering premium finishes and enhanced durability while maintaining the classic 336-based action.

The .444 Marlin cartridge was developed in 1964 to revive the concept of a high-energy, large-caliber lever-gun round after the decline of the .45-70 in mainstream production. Pushing 240–300 grain bullets with impressive velocity, the .444 became a favorite among hunters pursuing large game such as black bear, elk, and heavy-bodied deer. In a 24″ barrel like this one, the cartridge achieves excellent burn efficiency and downrange consistency, while Marlin’s rigid receiver, and the aftermarket trigger help maintain accuracy.

This example presents in Excellent condition throughout: bright 10/10 bore, roughly 98% original stainless finish, crisp laminate stocks, and tight fitment. The rifle has been upgraded with a Ranger Point Precision trigger, providing a notably lighter and cleaner break than the factory unit—an appreciated improvement for shooters who want refinement in a heavy-recoiling lever gun. With its original box, paperwork, and accessories, this 444XLR is both a capable large-game rifle and a highly desirable example of Marlin’s stainless big-bore era. Please check
