Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 444P is Marlin’s magnum-class lever-action engineered around the .444 Marlin cartridge — a high-performance lever round introduced to give traditional lever rifles magnum-level ballistics. The ported 18.5″ barrel on this example tames muzzle rise and perceived recoil compared with an unported tube while keeping the rifle compact and fast to shoulder; porting moderates the gun’s sharp impulse at the muzzle and helps with rapid follow-up aim in practical shooting scenarios. As a modern (2000) expression of Marlin’s lever heritage, the 444P blends classic tube-fed functionality with a performance-oriented chambering and feature set.
This particular rifle presents very strongly, retaining roughly 99% of its original blued finish, a bright 9/10 bore, and well-cared-for checkered stocks with only light handling marks. The ported barrel, Weaver-ready receiver, semi-buckhorn sighting and included factory box, owner’s manual, and RCBS die set make this a complete, well-documented package that reflects careful ownership and preservation.
