Markings: The top of the barrel is marked “MARLIN FIRE-ARMS CO. NEW-HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / PATENTED OCT. 11. 1887. APRIL 2. 1889. AUG. 1. 1893” and “32-40” at the receiver. The left shoulder of the barrel next to the rear sight is marked “SPECIAL SMOKELESS STEEL”. The top of the receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY”. The upper tang is marked “MODEL / 1893”. The bottom of the receiver is marked with the serial number “189996”. The bottom of the wrist has been handmarked “FEB 9 – 1900”.
Barrel Length: 26″ Octagonal
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a forward sloping blade slotted in a base that is dovetailed to the receiver. The rear sight is a buckhorn with a U-notch and an elevator piece that is dovetailed to the barrel. The upper tang is drilled, tapped and filled in two places for the installation of a tang sight (not included).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a capped forearm, straight grip, straight comb, and a crescent steel buttplate. The wood shows scattered compressions, draglines, dings, and scratches throughout. The most notable imperfection is a compression on the left side of the wrist. There is some darker discoloration on the left rear of the forearm. There are no visible chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows a mottled patina and light erosion throughout. The stocks rate in about Good-Very Good overall condition

Bore Condition: The bore is somewhat bright with erosion mainly in the grooves. The rifling is well defined.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 70% of its current metal finish. The top and right side of the receiver show a light mottled patina and the case coloring can easily be seen. There is thinning at the leading edges of the receiver and barrel. The barrel and magazine tube show scattered light surface oxidation and the mag tube shows a faint patina. There are scattered little nicks and scratches. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. However, the take down lever is stiff and will need to be lubricated. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is the first rifle Marlin designed for, then new, smokeless powder cartridges. Marlin christened the improved lever-action Model 1893, and offered it as a rifle or a saddle-ring carbine, both featuring case hardened receivers and sporting blued Ballard match-grade barrels. This is a takedown rifle variation of the Model 1893. In 1895, Marlin began chambering its Model 1893 for smokeless powder cartridges. This example was manufactured in 1899.
