The markings are clear save for the Marling Safety marking on top of the receiver which has partially faded. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.
Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 1893 was the company’s first lever-action designed specifically for smokeless cartridges, placing it in direct competition with Winchester’s Model 1894. Chambered here in .32-40 Winchester, a cartridge well respected for both target shooting and medium game hunting, this rifle reflects the transitional period when hunters were moving from black powder to smokeless powder rifles. The 26” half-octagon, half-round barrel, case-colored receiver, and crescent steel buttplate give it a classic late-19th-century sporting rifle appearance, while the half-length magazine adds to its clean, balanced lines.
This example, made in 1899, remains mechanically sound with a bright, sharp bore that rates very high for its age. Though the metal shows wear and patina consistent with more than a century of use, the rifle retains good markings and solid wood without cracks, offering both integrity and character. For Marlin collectors, lever-action enthusiasts, or anyone seeking a historically significant smokeless-era sporting rifle, this Model 1893 in .32-40 is a desirable and well-preserved piece of American firearms history.
