Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s two-line warning. The left side of the barrel is marked “1894 COWBOY LIMITED” followed by “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / **MODEL 1894CB – CAL. 357 MAG. OR 38 SPL.**” and is also marked with the “JM” proof. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number.

Barrel Length: 20”, Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade with a serrated face, dovetailed to the barrel.  The rear sight is an invertible u/v-notch semi-buckhorn elevator sight dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver has two pairs of drilled, tapped, and filled holes.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth American walnut with a straight grip, straight comb, Marlin checkered hard rubber buttplate, capped forend, and Marlin “bullseye” in the belly. There are compressions, scratches, nicks, and draglines scattered about the stocks.. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures approximately 13 3/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall, the stocks are in about Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows mild operation wear. There is thinning on the leading edges and muzzle. The loading plate has loading wear. There are scattered scratches and minor nicks.  The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly.  There is a receiver-mounted cross-bolt safety. We have not fired this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with its serial matching factory box.

Our Assessment: For more than a century, Marlin’s 1894 has served as a popular pistol-caliber lever-action rifle. The design is still in production today and finds favor with both hunters and Cowboy Action Shooting competitors. This example is a Model 1894CB Cowboy Limited made with a 20” octagonal barrel and chambered for .357 Magnum and .38 Special. The rifle is in about Fine condition with most of its metal finish remaining and general wear in the stocks and receiver. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. With its smooth lever action and utility between the .357 Magnum and .38 SPL, it is perfect for Cowboy Action Shooting or informal target practice.
